Settling in Sooke

Well, first let me introduce myself. My name is Doug and I am originally from Wisconsin, Milwaukee to be exact. At the age of 46 I have moved with Dixon to Vancouver Island in gorgeous British Columbia, Canada. We decided that a change was needed. So we applied for permanent resident status, packed up the household when that was granted and drove to Sooke, BC in a fully loaded U-haul. We arrived the beginning of October and are still in the process of getting settled in to our new home. We have a gorgeous hillside home on two acres overlooking part of Sooke Harbor but mostly a view across The Juan de Fuca Strait to the Olympic mountains in Washington state. NEVER in a million years could anyone have told me that I would be living in a glorious place like this, but here I am and still pinching myself. Along with the great home we have a wonderful hillside garden in the front yard and the centerpiece of that is a brand new greenhouse that the previous owners never had a chance to finish. SO, here I am, blogging, and I will be looking for advice on West Coast decorating and greenhouse gardening.
Thanks for tuning in and I'll be back as often as I can.

It sure sounds that BC is a bautiful place to live.
Congratulations on your new home! :). We're looking forward to hear more about how you're doing in your new house, the garden and the green house.
I would SOOO love to have a view and a garden!
Vancouver is definetly a place we have to look into.

A big welcome to you Doug and Dixie! Please let me know if you have any trouble settling in. In Sooke you will find a community, not just a home.

We are one of the fastest growing communities on Vancouver Island. If you have suggestions on how we can help ease the transition for newcomers, please contact me at jen@jensmith.org.

I'm so glad you commented on Nick's and my blog Life Without Borders. You made the glorious trek about a year after we did, and it seems like you're discovering exactly what we did - there really is a better life here, eh? :-)

I look forward to catching up on reading your experiences. It's a year late, but "welcome to the family." :-)

Oh, and P.S. A comment from your Councillor???!!! Priceless. You've got my vote Jen - well, if I could vote there, but nevertheless. PLEASE tell me you're Liberal, Green or NDP?! :-) And if you just happen to be Conservative, would you take a run for leadership, please?!

Hi Doug,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your story. I discovered your blog because I, too, am an American who immigrated to Canada. I am currently working on a project about people like us, and I would the opportunity to talk to you about your experiences.

I just drafted a note to explain my project and my questions for you in more detail, but I couldn't find an email address on your site or another way to send you a private message. Is this something you might be willing to send to me?

I can be reached at sarah.foy (at) ryerson.ca.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All my best,
Sarah
